Why Iceland?

Just a five-and-a-half-hour direct flight from New York, this easily accessible island nation is ideal for a quick weekend escape or an extended hassle-free vacation. No lengthy layovers or arduous long-haul flights required.

A bewildering array of tours ensures plenty of action throughout the year—think whale-watching cruises, volcano expeditions, snowmobile trips, glacier hikes, helicopter rides, gourmet experiences, Northern Lights excursions, and more.

From the thriving artsy capital of Reykjavik to the country’s quaint rural towns, Iceland boasts sophisticated Scandinavian culture and awe-inspiring architecture. Its friendly inhabitants speak impeccable English, and the entire country is remarkably safe—crime rates are among the lowest on Earth.

Culture vultures will adore Reykjavik’s eclectic institutions, while nature buffs will find paradise in dramatic volcanic landscapes further afield.

And everyone will love Iceland’s traditional gastronomy, where locally-sourced ingredients comprise each delicious bite.

Restaurants range from affordable local eats to extravagant Michelin-starred establishments—there’s something for every budget and taste.

Don’t miss the iconic Skyr, a decadent yoghurt-like sour milk cheese smothered in cream and wild berries. Another must-devour delicacy is the 100% grass-fed Icelandic lamb, a proud national icon used in a smorgasbord of local recipes.

There truly is something for everyone in this pint-sized North Atlantic paradise.

The best time to go

From the winter Northern Lights to the summer Midnight Sun, Iceland is a year-round destination.

In summer, the meadows transform into a sea of neon green, and the Viking horses roam. Balmy days (highs of 50-77 °F) prompt outdoor adventures, while enormous puffin flocks keep bird-watchers enthralled. Ice-free highways and minimal rain make it ideal for a road trip—try the epic Ring Road route. Best of all, the summer sun never really sets in this far-flung northern locale, a fascinating natural phenomenon that lets you make the most out of every day.

Winters are milder than you think (31°F in January on average, not unlike New York). What’s more, they offer a glimpse of the world-famous Northern Lights, one of the country’s biggest draw cards. Skiing, snowmobile excursions, and reindeer sledding provide plenty of extra thrills in the darker months.
Shoulder seasons like mid-October to November and February to March entail cheaper airfares and room rates.

Reykjavik and the Region

As the northernmost capital on Earth, Reykjavik is home to just 360,000 inhabitants. Yet the thriving coastal city punches well above its weight regarding culture, gastronomy, and the arts.

There’s a slew of intriguing museums to peruse, from costumed Viking dress-ups to informative historical exhibits and whacky phallic collections.

Hallgrimskirkja is the city’s landmark cathedral, a modern concrete construction with a 76-metre steeple inspired by age-old Icelandic traditions.

The city is famous for its music—Bjork and Sigur Ros grew up here. Catch a captivating gig at one of its countless late-night bars or watch world-class opera at the glass honeycomb Harpa Concert Hall.

Epicureans can enjoy a four-hour foodie extravaganza on the Reykjavik Gourmet Food & Wine Walking Tour. The decadent trip spans a diverse range of culinary haunts, from street food stalls to fine dining institutions.

No trip to Iceland would be complete without a soak in the Blue Lagoon. Located 40 minutes outside the city, this iconic blue geothermal pool bubbles brilliantly in an extinct lava field. We recommend staying overnight (or longer) at the Retreat Hotel, a landmark wellness resort sourcing mineral water straight from the lagoon.

The most famous Icelandic tour is the Golden Circle, a legendary 142-mile route covering three of the country’s most spellbinding natural sites: Thingvellir National Park, Strokkur Geysir, and Gullfoss Waterfall. Jump on a one-day coach tour or rent a car to explore at your leisure.

Whether you’re seeking a quick weekend escape or an extended multi-week getaway, there’s a limitless array of tours to suit your taste in Iceland.

We’ve teamed up with the country’s top tourism providers to offer the best Icelandic tours and hotels at competitive rates.
